Lucas Pinheiro Braathen won the last stage of the giant slalom at the Alpine Ski World Cupin Lillehammer, Norway, and became category champion for the season. To celebrate the title this Tuesday (24), he clocked 2min20s65 in the sum of the two descents.

The Alpine Skiing World Cup is the elite of the sportin which stages are contested throughout the year, with prizes awarded to the best in the ranking at the end of the season. Braathen entered the final stage already knowing that he could not win the Crystal Globe, a prize given to the champion of the general classification, which includes the accumulated points for each specialty.

There are, however, separate awards for the best in the specific slalom and giant slalom rankings, which receive smaller versions of the Globo, as is the case with the skier from Brazil this Tuesday. In the 2022/2023 season, when still represented Norwaythe current Olympic medalist won the slalom discipline trophy, which could be repeated this Wednesday, when the category decision is scheduled, starting at 6:30 am.

In this Tuesday’s decision, the first descent opened the way for the Brazilian to get his hands on the giant slalom Globe. He was the fastest, clocking a time of 1min11s24, 0s21 faster than Austrian Stefan Brennsteiner.

The Swiss Marco Odermart, his main rival, did not complete the race, so Lucas was one bronze away from confirming the specialty title. Braathen ran 1min09.41 on the second descent and finished with the eighth fastest time, which was enough to keep him in first place overall.
