Law authorizes sale of medicines in supermarkets

Lei autoriza venda de medicamentos em supermercados

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sanctioned, this Tuesday, March 24, the law that authorizes the sale of medicines in supermarkets across the country. The new rule establishes criteria to guarantee health safety and control in the marketing of products.

According to the text, medicines must be sold in an exclusive space within the establishments, with physical boundaries, such as walls and doors, in addition to following specific health surveillance standards. The presence of a pharmacist during all opening hours will be mandatory.

The law also defines that medicines that do not require a prescription can be paid for together with other purchases at the common cash register. In cases where a medical prescription is required, payment can be made at the pharmacy or at the general cashier, as long as the product is properly sealed.

The measure seeks to expand the population’s access to medicines, while maintaining technical requirements to avoid risks to consumers’ health.
