Englishwoman Gemma Fish (43) thought that the different size of her breasts was caused by a difficult pregnancy. Gemma from Salford, England, noticed during her pregnancy that her right breast began to shrink. “When everything else settled down, one of my breasts was suddenly much bigger than the other. There was almost a three-fold difference in size between them, which is really extreme. Nevertheless, I considered it just a normal symptom of pregnancy“, she stated.
However, after the birth of her daughter, her health condition did not improve in any way. She began to actively deal with the situation only after 14 months, when she saw that her nipple was drawn in. “That’s when I said to myself that I should really have it checked professionally. I put it off for a while, but in February 2023 I finally went for an examination. When I came to the doctor and explained everything to her, I could tell by the look on her face that it was very serious,” remarked Gemma.
The disease stripped her of her breasts
Subsequent tests revealed that Gemma was suffering from stage one breast cancer. “It was really shocking. I didn’t know what was going to happen next. I thought, ‘I’m a single mom, I don’t know how I’m going to manage all the everyday things when I’m sick’“, revealed the devastated Englishwoman.
In March 2023, Gemma underwent surgical removal of her right breast. In the following months, she had to undergo several rounds of intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Then came another blow that marked mom forever. “I had my ovaries removed as a precaution in January 2024 because my cancer was estrogen dependent. It was then that the doctors discovered that the disease had already progressed to the fourth stage“, she concluded, not long after that she also lost her left breast.
Even though Gemma lost both breasts, she decided not to go for any reconstructive surgery. Currently, she still suffers from an incurable oncological disease, but she gradually learned to live with it. “Life with stage four cancer today is completely different than it used to be. It is no longer a direct death sentence, there are many women who live for many years on various treatment plans. I really hope that one day I will get to the point where there will be no trace of the disease in my body“, she emphasized.
In addition, the mother urges other women not to ignore any changes in their breasts and, in case of the slightest doubt, to visit a doctor. “Simply start dealing with it in time. If I had gone for an examination right away and not buried my head in the sand, they would have caught it much earlier,” she concluded.
