Berlin – The German government assumes that a large number of the refugees admitted to the country will return from Syria to their homeland – but no longer wants to specify a target. The reason for protection for them no longer existed after the end of the civil war, said government spokesman Stefan Kornelius on Wednesday in Berlin. “This means that a significant number of war refugees will return home.” He described reports of differences of opinion between Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa as “superficial interest in a pseudo-conflict.”
