MEP Rima Hassan was detained in Paris. She is being investigated for advocating terrorism and drug possession

MEP Rima Hassan is facing an investigation for a post about a member of the Japanese Red Army. In addition, they found several grams of a synthetic drug in her luggage.

French member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan was taken into custody in Paris on Thursday on suspicion of advocating terrorism. Referring to a source in the radical left-wing party Unyielding France (LFI), of which Hassan is a member, Reuters reported about this, writes TASR.

  • Rima Hassan was detained in Paris on suspicion of terrorism.
  • She is also being investigated for possession and possession of drugs.
  • She published a post about the militant Okamoto on the X network.
  • The Observatoire juif de France filed a criminal complaint against her.

On Thursday, Hassan appeared at the judicial police headquarters in the second arrondissement of Paris, where she was summoned to give a statement. Her detention is part of an investigation by the National Online Hate Squad.

In the meantime, news websites in France reported that Hassan was also recently accused of using, transporting and possessing drugs. Several grams of a synthetic drug were found in the luggage she had with her when she came to the police.

It is not the first case

The primary reason for the prosecution of the MEP is her post published on March 26 on the X social network, in which she mentioned the name of a member of the ultra-left militant group Japanese Red Army (Nihon Sekigun) Kozo Okamoto. He was one of the three perpetrators of the attack that took place at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv on May 30, 1972. There, Okamoto and two accomplices opened fire into the crowd, killing 26 passengers and injuring 80. Rima Hassan’s post mentioning Okamoto was deleted shortly after it was published.

The organization Observatoire juif de France, which focuses on monitoring anti-Semitism, the protection of Jewish heritage and the life of Jewish communities, confirmed that it had filed a criminal complaint against Hassan on the day the post was published.

The newspaper Le Parisien recalled on its website that this is not the first case when proceedings are being conducted against Hassan on suspicion of advocating terrorism. Since the end of 2023, a judicial investigation has been conducted against her for statements that the French authorities evaluated as an expression of support for the Palestinian militant movement Hamas after the terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Hassan’s detention was sharply criticized by LFI leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who in a post on the X network called the police politicized and claims that “there is no longer parliamentary immunity in France.”
