Video features interaction between Jeremy Hansen and Christina Koch and details rehydrated meals consumed on board Orion
The mission’s astronauts released a video showing . The recording features an interaction between Canadian Jeremy Hansen and North American Christina Koch, who detail how food works in space and present some of the items consumed during the trip.
Right at the beginning, Hansen contextualizes his colleague’s experience. “I’ve only been eating space food for a few days here, but Christina lived in space for almost a year. She ate a lot of space food. So we have some items here to show you. Christina, do you want to help me?”it says. Koch spent 328 days in orbit before launching, making her one of the astronauts with the longest mission time.
Afterwards, she presents her partner’s dinner and explains how meals outside of Earth work. “Let’s see what we get out of here. This is Jeremy’s dinner, and in space you actually eat all of your food in some kind of packaging, plastic bags or little metallic bags, because we need to rehydrate a lot of our food. This is actually shrimp cocktail.”he states.

Without a conventional kitchen or refrigerator, the food consists of industrialized products, such as dehydrated, thermally processed and ready-to-eat meals. Food is prepared by adding water or heating in compact equipment, and the menu is defined before the mission, with the participation of the astronauts themselves, to ensure acceptance and nutritional balance.
Koch details that much of the food arrives dehydrated and needs water to be consumed. “This one has already been rehydrated, so we added water and the shrimp absorbed it back and it’s really tasty.”it says. Then it shows another example: “This is an example of food that has not yet been rehydrated. It was completely dehydrated for the trip here, and these are green beans.”.
The astronaut also highlights that, even in space, the diet follows basic nutritional principles. “We also need to eat our vegetables, even in space, but don’t worry, they also give us macaroni and cheese.”he states.
According to NASA, the crew eats 3 meals a day. As there is no gravity, liquids and small fragments can float, which requires specific packaging and careful handling to avoid contamination of equipment. Drinks are consumed with straws and valves, and food is often vacuum-packed or in individual portions.
ARTEMIS 2
The Artemis 2 mission, the first manned flight of NASA’s lunar program since 1972, was launched on April 1, 2026, from the Kennedy Space Center, in the USA. Four astronauts – Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen (Canadian Space Agency) – are on board Orion, on a flight around the Moon with a return to Earth in around 10 days.
The objective is to test Orion systems – including life support, communication and propulsion – and manned flight procedures around the Moon, in addition to evaluating the crew’s routine and performance in microgravity conditions. Astronauts will conduct experiments, systems monitoring and navigation maneuvers, ensuring the safety and effectiveness of future lunar missions.
