Executive replaces Hu Houkun and will also serve as rotating president from April 1 to September 30, 2026
Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. named Wang Tao as vice chairman of the board, replacing veteran Hu Houkun in a top-level shakeup at the company.
Under the system adopted by the company, Wang will also serve as rotating president from April 1 to September 30, 2026, overseeing the board of directors and its executive committee.
The change in leadership indicates a gradual generational transition within the Chinese technology giant, which is facing a challenging business environment marked by a significant slowdown in revenue growth.
Wang, 54, joined Huawei in 1997 and held the position of executive director responsible for the company’s main information and communications technology infrastructure unit. His promotion was already widely expected, as the division remains the company’s largest source of revenue. He replaces Hu, 58, who joined the company in 1990, helped structure Huawei’s global sales network and served as a rotating leader for more than a decade. Hu will remain on the board as a director.
The board changes, disclosed in the company’s 2025 annual report on March 31, keep Liang Hua as chairman and preserve Xu Zhijun and Meng Wanzhou – daughter of 82-year-old founder Ren Zhengfei – as vice-chairmen of the board. In the reorganization, Yang Chaobin from the ICT division was promoted to executive director. At the same time, Li Jianguo, head of manufacturing, rose from executive director to vice chairman of the supervisory board. Huawei Cloud CEO Zhou Yuefeng and ICT sales president Li Peng were added as directors.
The management overhaul comes after a year of losing momentum. Huawei recorded revenue of 880.9 billion yuan ($128 billion) in 2025, up 2.2% from the previous year, but a sharp slowdown compared to the 22.4% growth recorded in 2024. Net profit rose 8.7% to 68 billion yuan, recovering from a 28% drop in the previous year. President Liang stated that operations met expectations and highlighted digitalization, smart technologies and low-carbon trends as future strategic focus.
