US President Donald Trump accepted Pakistan’s proposal to temporarily stop fighting with Iran. The bilateral ceasefire comes just before the expiration of the American ultimatum and has the support of both Tehran and Israel. However, the key US demand remains the immediate unblocking of the strategic sea route.
US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday night that he agrees to Pakistan’s proposal for a two-week ceasefire with Iran if Tehran unblocks shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The head of the White House stated this on his social network Truth Social, reports TASR according to the reports of AFP, AP and Reuters agencies.
Trump: This will be a bilateral ceasefire
“I agree to suspend bombing and attacks on Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a bilateral ceasefire,” he wrote after talks with Pakistani officials, including Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. But Trump made the ceasefire conditional on Iran allowing the “full, immediate and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz.”
He further added that Tehran provided a feasible 10-point proposal that could contribute to ending the war in the Middle East. The White House chief’s announcement came about an hour and a half before the expiration of his ultimatum to Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz under the threat of destroying Iranian power plants and bridges.
According to CNN and the New York Times, Israel and Iran also agreed to the ceasefire.
