Lula will only be elected if alliances are built in the States, says PT president

PT president, Edinho Silva, said that the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), will only be re-elected if alliances are built in the States. In an interview with Band TV’s Canal Livre program, which aired on Sunday night, the 12th, Edinho Silva stated that the party will expand support in the states so that a national alliance can be built to support Lula. “MDB and PSD will not be with us in a national alliance”, he acknowledged.

According to the PT president, the party alone will not defeat the “authoritarian ultra-right” that is growing in Brazil without building a democratic field united around Lula’s candidacy.

“Whoever is going to defeat this right-wing that has authoritarian thinking is the democratic camp, not the PT; the PT has to have the humility to recognize this”, declared Edinho Silva. “Today, President Lula has platforms organized throughout Brazil, but built on the principle of alliance. The PT is part of a democratic field built with other political forces”, he said.

He stated that he was “very happy” that the Rio Grande do Sul PT “understood this challenge”. In the State, the party decided this week to give up the candidacy of Edegar Pretto (PT) to support Juliana Brizola (PDT).

The PT president also highlighted the importance of the alliance with the former mayor of Rio Eduardo Paes (PSD). He also stated that he has no doubt that the alliance with former Senate president Rodrigo Pacheco (PSB) in Minas Gerais is “very strong”.

Finally, Edinho cited the “very robust platform” in São Paulo with former Finance Minister Fernando Haddad (PT).
