At least 16 people were injured Tuesday by a former student who opened fire at a high school in southeastern Turkey before committing suicide. Referring to the local authorities, the AP and AFP agencies reported on this, writes TASR.
The attacker with a shotgun shot randomly at the secondary vocational school in the town of Siverek in the province of Sanliurfa. He then hid in a building and killed himself. Local media reported that most of the injured were students.
Special police units were dispatched to the scene after the attacker refused to surrender, while staff and students were evacuated, NTV reported. Video footage shows dozens of students running from the building to the gate and into the street. According to the authorities, the attacker was a former student of this school who was born in 2007. The motive for the crime is not clear. Shootings at schools are rare in Turkey, AP reminded.
