Sporting were eliminated this Wednesday in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, then drew 0-0 against the English side Arsenal, in the return game, in London, losing their unprecedented access to the semi-finals.
After the 1-0 defeat in Lisbon in the first leg, with a goal from German Kai Havertz in the 90+1 minute, the ‘lions’ needed to win away to progress, but they did not go beyond a goalless draw in their visit to the Premier League leader.
Sporting thus ‘falls’ for the second time in the quarter-finals of the main European club competition, repeating what had already happened in the 1982/83 season, while Arsenal advances to the semi-finals, in which they will face Spanish side Atlético de Madrid, who eliminated FC Barcelona.
