An attack on French soldiers of the UNIFIL mission in southern Lebanon left one dead and three wounded. Prime Minister Salam orders an immediate investigation.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam reported on Saturday that members of the United Nations Interim Force (UNIFIL) were targeted in an attack in southern Lebanon and ordered an investigation into the incident. “I most strongly condemn today’s attack on members of the French battalion as part of the UNIFIL mission,” said Salam. At the same time, the Prime Minister announced that he had issued “instructions for an immediate investigation of the event in order to clarify the circumstances of this attack and to hold the perpetrators accountable” for their actions.
Investigation of the UNIFIL incident
A UNIFIL spokesman confirmed to AFP that there had been an incident in a village in southern Lebanon and that an investigation was underway.
One French soldier was killed and three others were injured in the strike, the French president said on X. “Everything indicates that (militant movement) Hezbollah is responsible for this attack,” Macron said, calling on Lebanese authorities to apprehend the perpetrators.
