Pope rejects 'debate' with Trump: "The speech was prepared long before he spoke about me"

Pope Leo XIV said this Saturday that the speeches he made during his trip to Africa were not responses to the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and added that he has no interest in continuing this debate.

Pope Leo XIV made these statements aboard the plane carrying members of the press en route to Angola from Cameroon as part of his trip through Africa.

“The speech at the peace meeting a few days ago was prepared two weeks in advance, long before the President [Trump] speak out about me and about the message of peace that I promote”, he stated, regretting that, “despite this, it was interpreted as if he was trying to debate” with Donald Trump.

“It’s not my intention at all,” he stressed.

Leo XIV stated that he will continue his path “proclaiming the message of the Gospel”.

“The Gospel texts we use offer us many wonderful and beautiful aspects of what it means to be a Christian. Following Christ, promoting brotherhood and sisterhood, trusting in the Lord, but also looking for ways to promote justice and peace in our world,” he said.
