The meeting of progressive world leaders in Barcelona has not only served to jointly claim the role of the left in the resolution of current conflicts that affect the world. It has also meant a rapprochement between Mexico and Spain, whose relations in recent years have never been easy. The reason is the discomfort that the mexican government has shown cyclically by the disdain that considers that the Spanish authorities have faced the outrages committed during the conquest of America.
This Saturday, the differences have softened. The first to take a step was the Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, present at the IV meeting of the forum In defense of democracy. Upon arriving at the meeting, in brief statements to the journalists who were waiting for her, she assured that “there is no diplomatic crisis with Spain.” Furthermore, he highlighted that “There never has been.” Yes, he has also claimed that “very important to recognize the strength of the native peoples for our homeland”.
Not only this, within the summit, in which Spain has played the role of host, Sheinbaum has had a leading role. She has been one of the four leaders who have intervened openly – apart from Sánchez, Lula and the former Chilean president Gabriel Boric– and has announced that his country will host the next meeting of the forum, which will be in 2027. Mexico, therefore, is fully involved in this instrument promoted for just over two years. through Spain, Brazil and Chile.
This is the Sheinbaum’s first trip to Europe since she has been president and it comes after several gestures of rapprochement between both countries, first from the Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares and after the King, who recently acknowledged “a lot of abuse” after the arrival of the Spanish to the American continent.
Plea in favor of democracy
In his speech before the forum, Sheinbaum made a plea in favor of democracy and international law. For her, they are two elements that mean “elevating love above hate, cultivating generosity instead of greed and brotherhood above war.” Thus, he has defended Mexico’s position for “the self-determination of peoplesnon-intervention, the peaceful resolution of disputes, the rejection of the use of force and the legal equality of states”.
“Democracy implies freedom, but freedom is an empty word if it is not accompanied by social justicethe sovereignty and dignity of the people. When we talk about democracy, it is not that of the elites. It is not that of the concentration of wealth, but that of distribution,” she added. The president recalled her proposal before the G20 to allocate 10% of global spending on weapons to promote a global program to reforest millions of hectares of forest in the world, and added that he intends to promote “a declaration in against military intervention in Cubamay dialogue and peace prevail.”
