Petro says he will sue Noboa for slander

The Ecuadorian associated the Colombian with the leader of a criminal faction in an interview with a Colombian magazine

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petrosaid this Sunday (19) that will sue the head of state of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, for slander.

In an interview with Magazine Weeko Ecuadorian said that, upon his inauguration, in May 2025, the Colombian Esteve with members of the leftist Citizen Revolution movement. According to Noboa, the group would have ties with the leader of the Los Choneros factionAdolfo Macías, known as Fito.

Disagreements between Petro and Noboa

This is another one of the episodes of dispute between the two representativeswhich plunged Colombia and Ecuador into a trade war. In January, Noboa unilaterally imposed a tariff on Colombian importsalleging lack of control on the common border.

Colombia also responded with taxes and the suspension of energy saleswhile Ecuador progressively raised the tariff from 30% to 50% and, finally, to 100%. The latter will come into effect in May.

The tension in the bilateral relationship also worsened after Petro called Glas a “political prisoner”to whom he granted Colombian nationality.

Noboa rejected the classification which, according to him, attacks the country’s sovereigntyand summoned his ambassador in Bogotá for consultations. Colombia later adopted the same measure.
