Gilmar calls Moraes and asks for an investigation of Zema for a satirical video about the Supreme Court

The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Gilmar Mendes sent a representation to also minister Alexandre de Moraes so that the former governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), is investigated for a video published on his social media profile satirizing members of the Court.

The video, published by Zema when he was still governor, shows a conversation between puppets characterized as Dias Toffoli and Gilmar Mendes. The satire deals with the dean’s decision that annulled the breaches of confidentiality by the company Maridt, linked to Toffoli and his brothers.

In the dialogue, the character who represents Toffoli asks Gilmar to annul the breaches of confidentiality of his companies, approved within the scope of the Organized Crime CPI. In return, the dean would demand courtesies at the Tayayá resort, of which Toffoli and his brothers were also shareholders and which was the target of investigations in the scandal involving Banco Master, owned by Daniel Vorcaro.

In the representation, Gilmar asks that Zema be investigated in the fake news investigation on suspicion of a crime against the image of the STF and the minister himself. “The video vilifies not only the honor and image of this Federal Supreme Court, but also my own person”, states an excerpt from the document.

O InfoMoney questioned pre-candidate Romeu Zema’s team about the representation, but has not yet received a response.

Tension increases

Gilmar’s initiative occurs at a time when Zema toughens his speech against the Supreme Court and bets on criticizing ministers to boost his pre-candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic.

During the launch of the guidelines for his government plan, on Thursday (16), the former governor proposed one, starting with the reformulation of the position of STF minister.

The two main changes he defends are the setting of a minimum age of 60 to occupy a seat in the Supreme Court and the creation of a mandate with a limited time to remain in the position.

“My first measure will be to propose a new Supreme Court to Congress. One in which its members are accountable for their actions, in which relatives of ministers cannot have legal transactions”, he stated during the launch event of the government plan, in São Paulo.

A day earlier, on Wednesday (15), Gilmar had already made one on network

According to Gilmar, without institutional assistance from the STF, the then governor would have faced a scenario of serious fiscal disorganization and difficulties in guaranteeing the continuity of public services in the state.

“The contradiction is latent: when the STF makes decisions that guarantee cash flow or eliminate omissions by the local Legislature, the Court is accessed as a necessary agent for the functioning of the state machine. However, it is enough for it to contradict political interests for legal pragmatism to give way to empty platitudes of ‘judicial activism’ and attacks on the honor of ministers”, wrote the minister.
