Earthquake in Japan (January 2024)
A 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan. A tsunami warning was issued predicting waves that could reach three meters.
A violent earthquake of magnitude 7,4 today reached the north of Japan, announced the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA), which issued a alert of tsunami predicting waves that could hit three meters.
The earthquake occurred at 4:53 pm local time (8:53 am in Lisbon) in the waters of the Pacific, off the north coast of Iwate prefecture.
The tremors were so violent that they made tremble large buildings up to Tokyo, several hundred kilometers away.
The authorities did not report immediately victims or damage.
The first waves of the tsunami could immediately reach the north coast, warned the JMA, cited by the news agency France-Presse (AFP).
During the first hour post-earthquake, tsunami waves were recorded with almost 1 meter high – while 3 meter wave warnings were maintained.
The JMA warned that they are to be expected damage caused by waves tsunami.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced that the Government is already working with a special emergency unit.
The Japanese were soon advised to be in safe areas and move out of the areas that shook the most.
The Prime Minister also warned that there could be damage e you get off related to the earthquake or tsunami.
In the coming days, or even the coming weeks, there may be serious aftershocks, added the Japanese Meteorological Agency.
