authorities indicate the pros and cons of the city

On Brasília’s anniversary, politicians said what sets it apart from other cities and what still needs to improve

Brasília turns 66 this Tuesday (April 21, 2026). The city was inaugurated on April 21, 1960, during the administration of Juscelino Kubitschek (1902-1976). THE Poder360 asked former governors and pre-candidates for government of the federal capital in 2026 what differentiates the city from others and what still needs to be improved in the capital.

Watch the video report (8min42s):

The governor of the Federal District and pre-candidate for the government of the federal capital for the PP (Progressistas), said that Brasília “We have to be at the forefront, taking care of health, education and safety”.

The pre-candidate for government of the Federal District for the PSB (Brazilian Socialist Party), stated that a lot has changed in Brasília since 1960, but other areas still need to be improved, especially health.

Capelli said that Brasília is a city of meetings. “Here we meet people from all over Brazil, but also people who were born here”he declared.

The pre-candidate for the government of the Federal District for the PT (Workers’ Party), said that Brasília has a lot of diversity, with the joining of different regions of Brazil.

“The capital of a country is always the example of the country. Brasília needs to have that again. When it was planned, it was so that it could tell Brazil the right direction and today it is a little directionless. This needs to be recovered”Grass said. He cited health and the economy as examples of what needs to improve in the city.

The pre-candidate for the government of the Federal District for the PSD (Social Democratic Party), stated that Brasília changed Brazil.

Arruda said, however, that there is a lot of inequality in the federal capital and that this situation needs to change. “This is done with public investment policies in urban infrastructure, income supplement policies and comprehensive education schools”he declared.

federal deputy and former governor of the Federal District for the PSB, stated that Brasília is a “delicious city“, and praised Lúcio Costa’s urban project. “I don’t know any city where you leave your house, go to a pharmacy, a bar, a restaurant, school practically without crossing a street“, he said. Rollemberg also highlighted the occupation of public spaces as a differentiator of the capital.

On the other hand, Rollemberg stated that inequality is Brasília’s main challenge. For him, the city expresses “Brazil in a very profound way“, and that it is necessary to guarantee the same quality of life found in the Pilot Plan to satellite cities.

O Poder360 also sought out former governors (PT), Cristovam Buarque (Cidadania) and (MDB) to participate, but the politicians were unable to make the recording until the publication of this report.
