The president (PT) stated this Tuesday (21) that the government may take action against American police officers in Brazil if any type of abuse is proven against Marcelo Ivo, a Federal Police attaché targeted by American authorities.
Ivo was involved in the case that led to the arrest of the former federal delegate and former deputy for PL, last week, by the doss agency. Ramagem, a fugitive from Brazilian justice, was released two days later, on Wednesday (15).
“I don’t know what happened. I was informed this morning. I think that, if there was abuse by the American authorities with our police officer, we will do reciprocity with theirs in Brazil”, declared Lula, upon leaving the hotel where he stayed.
The president was in the country for Hannover Messe, the largest industrial fair in the world, which in this edition has Brazil as the honored country.
“We want to do things as correctly as possible, but we cannot accept this type of interference that some characters want to have in relation to Brazil”, said the president, before heading to the last stage of his trip to , .
On Monday, the government stated that a Brazilian official would have “circumvented both formal extradition requests and prolonged political witch hunts in” American territory. Ivo returns to Brazil this Tuesday (21).
“No foreigner can manipulate our immigration system to circumvent either formal extradition requests or prolong political witch hunts on U.S. soil. Today, we request that the relevant Brazilian official leave our nation for attempting to do so,” reads a post from the U.S. Embassy in Brazil.
Another identical post was published by the US State Department’s Western Relations Office.
After the arrest of the former deputy, on the 13th, he stated that there was a joint action between the USA and Brazil. The former deputy (-SP) said at the time that the arrest by the immigration service was motivated by an alleged minor traffic violation.
Shortly before the president’s demonstration, Chancellor Mauro Vieira declared his regret for the episode. “The PF delegate who was in Miami works together with the American authorities, and this function is based on a memorandum of understanding. Therefore, everyone knew and worked together”, stated the minister.
“We are awaiting clarification from the American authorities regarding the reason for this measure that was taken.”
Alongside Vieira, the general director of the PF, Andrei Rodrigues, who is also part of the presidential delegation in Germany, stated that Ivo had been working in Miami for two years “doing the police activity that we normally do in 34 countries”.
He denied that Ivo, who he did not mention by name, was being replaced before the natural deadline for removal from the role.
In Hannover and Barcelona, the previous stop on this trip to Europe, Lula severely criticized the US role in the war. “[Donald] Trump was not elected emperor of the world”, he even stated to the German press. This Tuesday, he once again called for the reform of the Statute and the Security Council of the , almost a mantra of the PT member in recent days.
In Portugal, the president will be received by the prime minister, Luís Montenegro and, later, at lunch, by the country’s new president, António José Seguro.
The Brazilian delegation returns to Brasília this Tuesday.
