US city of Houston bows to governor in dispute over deportations


Washington/Houston – The US city of Houston has given in to pressure from the state of Texas in the dispute over cooperation with US immigration authorities. The city council changed an ordinance that had restricted it. The office of Mayor John Whitmire of the Democrats announced Wednesday that funding totaling $114 million (97.16 million euros) has been secured. The Republican governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, threatened to withhold the money shortly before the World Cup.
