Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not been seen in public since the start of the war in Iran, has temporarily delegated part of the decision-making power to the generals of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps — who do not visit him, fearing that Israel could follow them to him and kill him.
Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khameneiwas seriously injured in an Israeli air attack at the beginning of the war, but remains “lucid and active”, according to information provided by the North American newspaper.
According to the newspaper, which cites several Iranian sources on condition of anonymity, Mojtaba Khamenei had delegated, at least temporarily, part of the decision-making power to the generals of the Islamic Revolutionary Guardideological army of the Islamic Republic.
The new ‘ayatollah’ succeeded his father, Ali Khameneiwho had been supreme leader of the Islamic Republic since 1989 and who was killed on the first day of the Israeli-American offensive, on February 28.
Since then, Mojtaba Khamenei not seen in public and has communicated only through written statementsstaying in a secret location for security reasons.
According to sources cited by The New York Times, the Iranian leader was subjected to several surgical interventions, including operations on one hand and one legin which the placement of a prosthesis is planned, in addition to having suffered burns severe on the face and lips, which make speech difficult.
O medical monitoring is ensured by a restricted teamwhich includes the Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, who is a cardiac surgeonand the Minister of Health, says the newspaper.
Communication with the outside is done through handwritten messages transported by couriers, in a system designed to avoid security risks. Even senior commanders of the Revolutionary Guard and senior government officials they do not visit him, fearing that Israel might follow them to him and kill him.
Also according to The New York Times, it assumed a central role in conducting military strategy in the conflict with Washington and Tel Aviv. Among the actions attributed to the military structure is the blockade of the Strait of Hormuzone of the world’s main energy routes.
On Tuesday, the US President, Donald Trumpannounced the decision to extend the ceasefire with Iran until the Iranian government, which it considers divided, presents it with a unified proposal for an agreement.
Trump made this decision a few hours before the ceasefire two-week period previously agreed with Tehran will expire.
Despite the ceasefire, Iran kept the Strait of Hormuz under blockadewhile the United States applies a naval blockade on Iranian ships and ports.
