Medina started better and opened the heat with scores of 4.67 and 3.50, taking the lead in the first minutes. Pittar responded with wave 6.17 and then turned around with 5.50.
The Australian increased his advantage by scoring 9.00, the highest score of the day, and reached 15.17 in total. Medina improved his score to 12.46, with 6.83 and 5.63, but now needed 8.35 to regain the lead.
In the final minutes, the sea became slower, reducing opportunities. Even with priority, the Brazilian did not find enough wave to turn around and confirmed the runner-up position.
