This river beach in Portugal has water at 30 degrees and is ‘next to’ a village where you can sleep for €60 in the summer

Praia Fluvial da Tapada Grande, em Mértola.

The Tapada Grande river beach, located in Mina de São Domingos, in the municipality of Mértola, has stood out as a summer destination in Portugal, combining unusually warm water with a calmer environment compared to other bathing areas. A few minutes’ drive from the town of Mértola, this location has been touted as an alternative to the busier beaches in the south of the country.

In addition to the bathing component, the proximity to Mértola and the existence of accommodation at more affordable prices contribute to the growing interest in this area of the Alentejo interior.

Repeated European recognition over the years

According to the portal, this river beach has been recognized as the best European destination in the inland beaches category at the World Travel Awards for several years. The main difference is the water temperature, which can reach around 30 degrees, making it a popular option for those who prefer warmer waters.

The beach is approximately 100 meters long and is located in a natural environment that stretches across the Tapada Grande dam. The publication adds that the less congested environment has been one of the valued elements, especially by families looking for spaces with less traffic.

Infrastructures designed for different profiles

It is important to highlight that the beach has several support structures, including a bar, bathrooms and accessibility for people with reduced mobility. “There’s not much fuss, so it’s a good choice for kids to enjoy the summer”, explained the Mértola City Council, cited by NiT.

According to the same source, the space is guarded by lifeguards during the bathing season and includes equipment such as free umbrellas, grassy areas and a playground. There is also a medical center, in addition to leisure areas, which reinforces the conditions for prolonged stays on site.

Alternatives besides diving

According to the same portal, visitors can also rent canoes and pedal boats to explore the reservoir, which has calm waters. There are areas with picnic tables and barbecues, allowing for outdoor dining, as well as a beach bar with simple options.

The place also includes an amphitheater, where events such as concerts and open-air cinema sessions are held occasionally. The city hall told the same publication that the infrastructure includes several sanitary facilities, including spaces adapted for people with reduced mobility.

Mértola adds a historical dimension to the visit

A short distance from the beach, the village of Mértola offers a historical setting that complements the visit. The castle, located in an elevated position, is one of the main points of interest. According to the travel blog Vaga Mundos, the current structure of the castle is mainly the result of interventions carried out in the 13th century, in the context of the Reconquista, including the construction of the keep.

Archaeological excavations in the vicinity have revealed remains from different eras, including Islamic and Roman structures. Typical elements of Islamic architecture were also identified, as well as evidence of a Roman nucleus that could correspond to an administrative or religious space.

Affordable accommodation enhances attractiveness

Note that the region continues to offer moderately priced lodging options, even during peak months. Among these alternatives is the Beira Rio local accommodation, where it is possible to find stays from around 60 euros per night in August.

The river beach is located less than two hours from Faro and about three hours from Lisbon, which makes short trips easier. The combination of relatively simple access, specific bathing conditions and historical context contributes to the positioning of this destination on the national tourist scene.
