A new general strike is coming against the labor package

Demonstration “Down with the Labor Package! Increase wages, guarantee rights, a better life is possible”, organized by the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers – Intersindical Nacional (CGTP-IN). Lisbon, April 17, 2026.

The most likely date for the next strike organized by CGTP is June 2nd. UGT, negotiating with the Government, does not guarantee membership.

CGTP is preparing to announce a new general strike against the revision of labor legislation by the Government, pointing to the day June 2a Tuesday, as the likely date for the strike.

The decision would have been approved this Tuesday by the National Council of the union center and should be formalized on Friday, during the celebrations of May 1st, Labor Day.

Despite not having publicly confirmed the date, the general secretary of CGTP, Tiago Oliveira, said that the center will announce “new forms of struggle” on May 1st, continuing the workers’ protest against the legislative changes under discussion and working conditions.

Several sources confirm to the weekly that the general strike on June 2 received the green light at the central’s internal meeting.

The trade union central assumed that would not participate in negotiations about this legislative package: he preferred to concentrate efforts on social and political mobilization.

A UGTin turn, has not yet made a decision on a possible adherence to a new joint general strike. The general secretary of the center, Mário Mourão, has argued that it is necessary wait for the end of formal negotiations with the Government and social partners.

A plenary meeting of social consultation, which the minister responsible for the dossier has already indicated will be the last before the proposal goes to Parliament.

At CGTP, internally, the decision was almost unanimous, with only a few abstentions from representatives close to the socialist trend, Expresso knows. These are the sectors that argue that all possibilities for dialogue must be exhausted, in line with the appeal of the President of the Republic.
