The Algarve Food Bank launched a fundraising campaign with the aim of expanding the Horta Solidária project, an initiative that has been around for a decade and now aims to reach new municipalities in the region.
Expansion is planned for Tavira and Portimão, with the goal of reaching a total area of 50 thousand square meters in the next three to five years.
Campaign focuses on solidarity and sustainability
Under the motto “Be part of the solution, help cultivate the future”, the campaign aims to reinforce a project that promotes access to fresh and healthy food for families in vulnerable situations.
Horta Solidária is based on sustainable agricultural practices and community engagement, combining social and nutritional impact with environmental responsibility and inclusion, while creating opportunities and strengthening local support networks.
Fund finances expansion and social integration
The campaign takes place on the GoFundMe platform and donations are intended to support the implementation and maintenance of the gardens. Interested parties can make their donations.
According to Nuno Cabrita Alves, “the amount raised will be used to implement and maintain all vegetable gardens, ensuring preparation and maintenance of land, seeds and plants, irrigation systems and agricultural materials, technical monitoring and coordination and integration of people into social and professional integration programs”.
The person responsible also adds that “the annual cost of a garden with this model is approximately 25,000 euros, an investment that translates directly into food, inclusion and opportunities”.
Project already supports thousands of beneficiaries
Currently, Horta Solidária occupies an area of 12 thousand square meters and has already produced 13.7 tons of organic vegetables.
These products reached 10,147 direct beneficiaries, in addition to several institutions served, highlighting the impact of the project in combating food insecurity in the region.
