Commission: EU is committed to the agreement with the US - "We will protect our interests"

Its stability in the agreements it signs, but also the observance of all legislative procedures, was recommended by its representative Thomas Rainier, answering a question about the American president’s new 25% tariffs on European vehicles and trucks.

“We are the most trusted partner around the world. When you sign an agreement with the EU, you know that’s what you’re going to get,” he said and clarified that “from day one we are implementing the joint statement and we are fully committed to honoring our joint commitments. Our work is done in accordance with the legislative procedures.”

A message of calm from Rainier

Rainier meaningfully pointed out that “it is not the first time that we have said from this stage that we remain very calm, focused on the implementation of the joint statement for the benefit of our companies and our citizens”.

He made it known that there are talks between the two sides, stressing that “we remain in close contact with our counterparts, to ask for clarity about the American commitments”.

Finally, Rainier emphasized that there will be a European response if the US carries out its threats. “If the US takes steps inconsistent with the joint statement, we will keep our options open to protect EU interests,” he stressed.
