Medical teams are working to remove two people with symptoms of hantavirus, a deadly disease, following a possible outbreak on a luxury cruise ship docked off the coast of Cape Verde, which was carrying mainly British, American and Spanish passengers.

Around 150 people are still stranded on the ship after three people – a Dutch couple and a German citizen – died and others became ill, including a British citizen who had disembarked earlier and is being treated in South Africa.

“We are not just headlines: we are people with families, with lives, with people waiting for us at home”, says Jake Rosmarin, an American travel blogger, in a video published on Instagram this Monday, directly from the ship. “There’s a lot of uncertainty and that’s the hardest part.”

The World Health Organization said there was no reason to panic and that the risk to the general public was low, as the disease is typically transmitted by rodents and does not spread easily between humans.
