The team is preparing to close the cycle of preparations for the World Cup with a match against Nigeria. The match is scheduled for June 10th, at 8:45 pm, at the Dr. Magalhães Pessoa Stadium, in Leiria.
This will be the final test for the team led by Roberto Martínez before the trip to the United States, the main stage of the World Cup, which starts on June 11th and is co-organized with Mexico and Canada.
The game also takes on a supportive dimension, at a time when the Central region is still recovering from the damage caused by Storm Kristin at the beginning of the year.
The return of the ‘Equipa das Quinas’ to Leiria, a city where they had not played since the one-goal draw against the United States in 2017, was welcomed with enthusiasm by the local authorities.
The president of Leiria City Council, Gonçalo Lopes, highlighted the symbolism of the occasion, evoking the city’s ability to overcome the storm after the storm that devastated much of the country.
“After Storm Kristin, when the wind still echoes in the memory and the force of nature put us to the test, Leiria rises again as the home of all Portuguese. Here, where adversity does not overcome hope, our Team finds an entire country beating from the same heart. Welcome to Leiria!”
Before the duel with Nigeria, Portugal will also play a first preparatory game against Chile, on June 6th, at 6:45 pm, at the National Stadium, in Oeiras.
