SIRESP will have an investment of around 36 million euros to make the network more energy autonomous and redundant, announced a sector source, when the proposals for the study on the evolution of the system are presented.
The working group created by the government around a year ago to find an alternative to the Integrated System of Emergency and Security Networks in Portugal (SIRESP) presents, this Tuesday, at the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI) the proposals for the technical-strategic study for the evolution of SIRESP.
A source from the sector told Lusa that the interministerial working team presented the government with 33 recommendations that aim to The objective is to reinforce the network with more energy autonomy and redundancies.
According to the same source, the investment is around R$ 36 million and the implementation period is 18 months.
The objective of this investment “is to consolidate existing capabilities, but also to introduce new capabilities that reinforce robustness and resilience”, the source added.
Strengthen communications, improve territorial coverage and integration with other emergency systems
The working group, which this Tuesday presents its proposals, was created after SIRESP failed to and since February, the Government has had the study’s conclusions in its possession.
At the time, the executive considered that a new system was necessary that was “more robust, reliable, resilient and interoperable” due to “structural and operational limitations in scenarios of high operational demand”.
The program (PTRR) has planned a reform of SIRESP with the aim of modernizing the network, reinforcing communications redundancy, improving territorial coverage and integrating that system with other emergency and civil protection systems.
Also within the scope of the PTRR, it is foreseen provide all parish councils with a SIRESP telephone.
In a recent interview, the Minister of Internal Administration revealed that in the summer the coming into existence more equipment, relays and own communication channels.
The SIRESP communications network has been marked by several controversies since it was created, having undergone the biggest changes following failures in combating but again had limitations during the 2025 blackout and Storm Kristin that affected the central region at the end of January.
The SIRESP network is the exclusive communications network of the Portuguese State for the command, control and coordination of communications in all emergency and security situations, responding to the needs of more than 40,000 users and supporting more than 35 million calls annually.
The study proposals will be presented by the Minister of Internal Administration, Luís Neves, and by the coordinator of the technical and multisectoral work team to replace SIRESP.
