Holidays 2026 not only earlier. There will be less free time
It is always set by the Ministry of National Education at the beginning of the school year. The difference is small, but it may be important for parents who book dates for trips and summer camps. According to the regulation of the Minister of National Education, the last day of school always falls on the first Friday after June 20. This means that the holidays can start on June 21 or on June 27 at the latest – it all depends on the arrangement of days in the calendar. In 2026, the holidays will start a day earlier than a year ago. In 2025, students started their summer break on Saturday, June 28. This year, the holidays will start on Saturday, June 27, and Friday, June 26 will be the last day of school. Interestingly, in 2027 the holidays will start even earlier, on Friday, June 25.
The last day is flexible and depends on the day on September 1. it always starts on September 1, but sometimes this day falls on a weekend and then the holidays last a maximum of 2 days longer, i.e. until September 3. In 2026, September 1 falls on a Tuesday, which means that the holidays will not be extended and students will have almost a whole week of school at once. Additionally, the 2026 holidays will be one of the shortest possible. The break from teaching will last as long as 66 days, which makes it one of the shorter ones.
The longest possible holiday duration is 72 days. In this case, the holiday must start on June 21. The shortest vacation lasts 65 days when the break begins on Saturday, June 28 (this was the case in 2025).
Holidays in Poland. When do students have time off?
After Poland regained independence in 1918, the education system began to be gradually reorganized. In the Second Polish Republic, attempts were made to standardize the school calendar, although social and economic realities were still taken into account. Summer holidays usually lasted about two months, but their exact framework was not as rigidly defined as today. During the Polish People’s Republic, the rules for organizing the school year were further streamlined. More uniform starting and ending dates for classes were introduced, and summer holidays began to take a form similar to today’s – covering July and August and part of June. However, the regulations could still change and the system was not as precisely written as it is today. The rules in force today have their source in regulations introduced after 1989 and then clarified in subsequent regulations of the Minister of Education. The key rule, according to which the end of the school year falls on the first Friday after June 20, was established in the regulation on the organization of the school year from the beginning of the 21st century and is still in force today. Thanks to this, the length of the holiday is variable, but within certain limits.
In practice, this means that modern holidays in Poland last from 66 to 72 days.
