USP students occupy rectory and demand resumption of negotiations

Students protest against the end of negotiations and want readjustment of aid and improvements in university restaurants

Students from USP (University of São Paulo) occupied, this Thursday (May 7, 2026), the institution’s rectory building. The students demand that the rector Aluísio Augusto Cotrim Segurado resume negotiations to meet student agendas.

In a statement released on Monday (May 4), Segurado declared that negotiations are closed after more than 5 hours of meetings with student representatives and trade unionists. According to the rectory, there were almost 20 hours of negotiations including all the rounds of conversations held since the start of the strike.

Claims from USP students

Students demand changes to the rules for using academic spaces, the creation of trans quotas and indigenous entrance exams. In addition, they also report problems in the university restaurant, such as the presence of larvae, cockroaches and pieces of glass in the meals. A draft on the use of spaces was revoked by the rectory after the strike was extended.

Another focus of the impasse is the PAPFE (Student Training and Permanence Support Program). The rectory proposed readjusting the full aid from R$885 to R$912 and the partial housing aid from R$335 to R$340. The student movement considers the amounts insufficient given the cost of staying at the university.

In a note on Instagram, the Dean of Inclusion and Belonging at USP says it vehemently repudiates the “acts of violence, vandalism and vandalism of public property” held in the rectory building. According to the statement, the actions “they are incompatible with the principles that govern the academic environment, based on dialogue, respect and democratic coexistence”.
