A strong appeal from the palace! President Pellegrini addressed the Slovaks: I am asking everyone…

The President of the Slovak Republic Peter Pellegrini asks everyone to give space in their hearts to thoughts of peace and tranquility, instead of anger and hatred. The head of state stated this in a Sunday speech in Liptovský Mikuláš on the occasion of the celebration of the 81st anniversary of the end of the Second World War. At the same time, Pellegrini thanked everyone who defended our freedom with a weapon in hand in this war.

According to the president, no system is perfect, and it hasn’t been perfect in the past decades either. “But he was still able to ensure peace on such a wide scale as we had not known it before. And with the exception of some historical events when people’s blood froze and when the world narrowly missed a general devastating war, whole generations lived in peace and in the hope that the madness of war would not happen again,” he said.

According to him, eighty-one years after the most destructive war in history, the decline of the world order cannot be overlooked. “Increasingly, great powers and other states are leaning towards military solutions to conflicts. Suddenly, it is completely normal to invade your neighbor, attack another state without declaring war, or conduct literally liquidation processes against entire population groups. The powerful of this world are increasingly resigning themselves to diplomatic solutions and looking for military shortcuts, from which they promise faster solutions to their real or imagined problems,” pointed out Pellegrini.

He pointed out that at the beginning of the First World War, the soldiers, enthusiastically celebrating its beginning, originally thought that they would be home from the front by the next Christmas. “And instead they experienced four years of hell in the trenches, the likes of which they could not even dream of in their worst nightmares.” he pointed out.

Even at the beginning of the Second World War, some countries thought that they would enforce their territorial demands through short armed conflicts, which would satisfy their appetites for power, redraw the borders and the world would respect it. “However, the result was an all-out war that recognized no international rules, no human rights, and no moral boundaries.” he underlined.

Also in this context, he warned against similar ideas that occur more and more often in the world. “I warn with the sight of our war veterans and the painful thought of the war suffering of hundreds of millions of people. I warn against the memory of every unknown soldier who fell in battle, because these unknown soldiers were millions as a result.” emphasized the President of the Slovak Republic.

He also expressed hope that the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East would end as soon as possible. “That the suffering of hundreds of thousands of people around the world, which today is not officially in a world war, but many parts of it remind such a war all too faithfully, will end as soon as possible,” he added.
