In response to US proposals, Iran demanded the end of the war in the entire region, including in Lebanon, and the release of frozen Iranian assets, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this Monday.
“The only thing we required were the Iran’s legitimate rights“, declared the ministry’s spokesman, Esmail Baghai, during the weekly press conference in Tehran, cited by the news agency France-Presse (AFP).
Iran’s “generous offer” and the US’ “biased stance”
The Iranian diplomacy spokesman stated that Tehran’s response also includes “safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring security in the region and in Lebanon“.
It is a “generous offer” for regional stability, said Baghai, quoted by public broadcaster IRIB, according to the Spanish news agency Europa Press (EP).
Baghai lamented that the “United States continues to insist on a biased stance.”
He stated that Iran “did not demand any concessions” from Washington, focusing only on ending the war and “maritime piracy against Iranian ships.”
The spokesperson warned that “any intervention in matters relating to the Strait of Hormuz will only complicate the situation.”
Baghai declined to comment on the possibility of Russia accepting Iranian uranium reserves to facilitate a deal.
“Right now, we are focused on putting an end to the war. We will discuss any decision regarding the nuclear program and its material later, when the time comes,” he said.
Baqhai’s statements come after Trump indicated, through social media, that he did not like the Iranian proposal at all.
The United States and Iran are in a dialogue process mediated by Pakistan.
Disagreements have prevented a second meeting from being held in Islamabad, which hosted the first direct meeting after the April 8 ceasefire.
The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the seizure of Iranian ships by US forces have been the reasons cited by Tehran for not appearing in Islamabad, considering that such actions violate the ceasefire.
Despite this, both countries maintain contacts through Pakistani mediation.
