In addition to being a TSE minister, he has also been a STF judge since 2020, when he was appointed to the position by former president Jair Bolsonaro
The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and vice-president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Kassio Nunes Marques, assumes the presidency of the TSE on Tuesday night (12).
Nunes Brands was appointed to the STF by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in 2020 and became a member of the TSE in 2023. Kassio has been vice-president of the Court since May 2024, working alongside Cármen Lúcia, who held the presidency in the last two years. Now he must lead the procedures for the 2026 elections in October.
The 53-year-old minister was born in Teresina, Piauí. He graduated in law from the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI), and completed his specialization in process and tax law at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC). Nunes Marques also has a master’s degree in constitutional law from the Autonomous University of Lisbon (Portugal) and a doctorate in law from the University of Salamanca (Spain).
Acted as lawyer between 1996 and 2011 in the civil, labor and tax areas. Between 2007 and 2009, he was a sectional advisor to the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) in Piauí, and from 2010 to 2011 he was a substitute member of the Federal Council of the OAB.
In 2011, he was appointed by then president Dilma Rousseff to be Judge of the Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region, where he remained until 2018.
The minister is the son of public school teachers and grew up on the outskirts of Teresina. He was the first in his family to graduate from a higher education course.
