The president of the Christian Democracy (DC) party, former deputy João Caldas, confirmed to the Broadcast that the former minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Joaquim Barbosa became the party’s pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, replacing former Minister of Defense Aldo Rebelo.
“The change has already been made by the people,” Caldas told the reporter. He highlighted that Aldo did not score in the polls, and stated that, despite the respect he maintains for him, the former minister’s candidacy for President is not viable at the moment.
According to Caldas, the agreement with Aldo was that he would work for three months to see if the candidacy would be viable. “If it doesn’t become viable, it’s out. This was all pre-established”, he said. In the meantime, however, Joaquim Barbosa joined the DC. “Along the way a pearl appeared, a diamond called Joaquim Barbosa.”
The information that Aldo would be replaced by the former STF minister was initially published by the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo. On the afternoon of this Saturday, the 16th, the former Minister of Defense published a note on Instagram in which he said that his pre-candidacy was maintained and that Barbosa’s candidacy is an affront to what he defends as political relations supported by transparency and democratic decisions.
To the Broadcastthe president of the DC said that Barbosa’s pre-candidacy has already been made and that the former STF minister appeared to “balance the institutions and give hope to Brazil”. “He is a Brazilian who represents all of us. I am very excited about this candidacy”, he stressed.
The DC president reaffirmed that Aldo had his opportunity, but that he did not score in the polls after months of exposure. “He can’t complain about the party. The party is an institution and it has to look at Brazil, it has to have responsibility. It’s clear that the people have already said no to him as president.”

He considered that, if Aldo wishes, the DC could support him for other positions, such as senator, deputy or governor. “He has options,” he emphasized. “Politics is done with reason and emotion, less with the liver. I have nothing against Aldo personally, so much so that he spent all these months being the party’s candidate, but he didn’t become viable. That’s where hope arises for Brazil within democracy, Joaquim Barbosa.”
