The Hungarian Prime Minister expects a return to cheap Russian energy after the end of the conflict in Ukraine

Péter Magyar believes that after the war, the EU will return to cheaper Russian energy. He claims that a low price will be the key to the competitiveness of the European economy.

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar, in an interview on Thursday for the news portal of the Polish daily Rzeczpospolita, expressed the expectation that after the end of the war in Ukraine, the European Union will return to cheaper Russian energy for reasons of competitiveness. The correspondent of TASR in Budapest informs about it based on the report of the agency MTI.

In the interview, the Prime Minister emphasized the necessity of diversifying energy sources, but also the importance of low prices. According to him, after the war, the energy policy of the EU could change significantly.

They want to diversify resources

Asked about the import of Russian gas and oil to Hungary, Magyar said that even after the election victory of the Tisza party, “the geography remained unchanged.” The Hungarians instructed the new government to diversify energy sources as much as possible, but also to take into account the price of raw materials.

The Hungarian Prime Minister recalled that liquefied gas, which can be transported via the Baltic Sea, then through Poland and Slovakia, is significantly more expensive than gas coming from Romania, Russia or Austria.

“Of course, we will start negotiations and we want to cooperate,” he added, adding that during Wednesday’s negotiations, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk promised to “do everything to reduce the price (of gas) so that the offer is as competitive as possible,” but the outcome also depends on the gas market.
