The decision to designate Christmas Eve as a day off from work has resulted in the government receiving more and more petitions from… This time, the Senate received a petition to establish Children’s Day, i.e. June 1, as a day off from work. According to the Pulshr website. pl the author of the petition points out that thanks to such a decision, parents would be able to spend this day with their children. In practice, parents work on June 1 and do not have the opportunity to celebrate together. Additionally, in many schools there are no classes on that day and children return home earlier, which complicates the matter of picking them up by parents. The author of the petition presents several solutions in which he suggests that June 1 should be a day off from work for parents. Another proposed solution is additional special leave for parents and shortening working hours. According to the authors of the petition, care for children’s well-being should be visible not only in declarations, but also in real actions of the government.
Various arguments often appear in discussions about establishing Children’s Day. Supporters of this solution point to the possibility of devoting more time to family and children, which could strengthen family bonds and give children a sense of greater appreciation. The symbolic importance of such a gesture on the part of the state is also emphasized. On the other hand, there are concerns about the potential economic costs for the economy related to an additional day off, as well as issues of work organization and functioning.
Will June 1 be a day off from work?
The petition is now before the Senate Petition Committee. Now it is up to senators to decide whether Poles need an additional day off from work. Considering that in Poland there are as many as 14 public holidays, designating another one could be troublesome. However, if June 1 is actually declared a day off from work, it may turn out that Poles will receive a new long weekend. If Children’s Day falls on a Friday or Monday, you will be able to extend the weekend to 3 days.
For comparison, in Great Britain employees have only 8 statutory days off, and in the Netherlands 9. France is slightly better with 11 days, while Germany is a more complex case – there the number of holidays depends on the land and ranges from 9 to even 13 days. Spain usually offers 12 to 14 days off, so in practice the number is very similar to Poland.
If you look globally, Europe is not the record holder at all. There are countries that have much more holidays – in some Asian countries the number of holidays exceeds 20 per year, and the record holders even reach almost 30.
