Former minister contests movement by Christian Democracy (DC) to launch Joaquim Barbosa for president and expulsion process from party
Former minister Aldo Rebelo stated this Saturday (23) that maintains his pre-candidacy for the presidency of the Republic and declared that any attempt to interrupt his electoral plans will be taken to court. The statement comes amid the (DC) against him and the party’s announcement about one (STF), Joaquim Barbosa.
Rebelo confirmed that he continues to fulfill political agendas and that he intends to move forward with his candidacy. “It is maintained, I have agendas to fulfill, I have fulfilled them. And any measure that aims to block the Movement for National Development (MPD) will naturally be prosecuted”, he stated.
The former minister’s speech is a response to the movement of the National Executive of Christian Democracy. The party announced the name of Joaquim Barbosa as its pre-candidate for the Planalto Palace. Rebelo, however, questioned the consolidation of this new candidacy, citing the history of the former STF minister in 2018, when the former magistrate gave up running for PSB.
In addition to Barbosa’s appointment, Democracia Cristã opened an administrative process to expel Aldo Rebelo from its ranks. The party claims that the former minister would have failed to comply with party guidelines. Rebelo denies irregularities and maintains that the attempt to remove him from the dispute violates his political rights within the organization.
