American Rachel Passarella (42) was just going through a difficult breakup when she noticed something strange on her tongue. Although she initially assumed it was just a canker sore (painful boil), she couldn’t get rid of it even after a few weeks, so she began to take the situation seriously, . It took the mother of 4 months to learn that she was actually suffering from malignant cancer.
- After breaking up with her partner, Rachel noticed a red spot on her tongue.
- According to her, the first dentist called it a harmless aphthous disease, despite the ongoing difficulties.
- A biopsy later confirmed squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue.
- Mom lost a significant part of her tongue.
Rachel from the US state of Florida broke up with her longtime partner in September 2025, and she endured this separation very hard. That’s when she happened to notice a red spot on her tongue, but since she was constantly crying and generally not feeling well, she assumed it was nothing serious. “I thought it was just a canker sore,” she said.
Just to be sure, Rachel mentioned the symptom three weeks later during a routine dental checkup. “The dentist assured me that I was healthy. He also claimed that it was probably just an aphtha,” she added.
Since the blob was small and the dentist expressed no concern, Rachel began trying canker sore patches, coconut oil, and other natural methods.. Despite weeks of effort, she did not get rid of the symptom. A few weeks later, the size of the blister even doubled, so the American woman visited an otorhinolaryngologist. “He noted that it was an inflammatory lesion, but nothing more“, she stated.
When eating problems and unwanted weight loss later emerged, Rachel sought the help of another dentist. He immediately informed her that it was probably cancer. “It happened at the worst time. Just the day before, I lost my job, my health insurance, and shortly after that I lost my car in an accident that was not my fault” explained the desperate woman.
In March of this year, six months after noticing the spot, Rachel finally received an accurate diagnosis. A biopsy revealed that he was suffering from squamous cell carcinoma, a cancer of the tongue. She underwent surgery to remove a huge tumor along with 40 lymph nodes on the right side of her neck. Fortunately, the lymph nodes were not affected by the cancer, which meant that the disease did not spread further.
After the procedure, she had to cope with other complications. Rachel lost almost 40 percent of her tongue and once had to be rushed to the hospital because of a ruptured artery in the area of the removed tumor. He currently sees a speech therapist and has check-ups every three months to see if the cancer has returned..
For a single mother of four children, this period is extremely financially demanding. The situation is also complicated by the fact that he cannot work. So now she’s raising money through a GoFundMe page to cover bills and medical expenses while she finds employment.
