European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday welcomed “progress towards a US-Iran deal” aimed at ending the war in the Middle East. These comments were made at a time when US officials said that the announcement of the agreement with Tehran could happen as early as Sunday. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also praised this move. TASR informs about it according to the reports of the AFP and DPA agencies.

  • Ursula von der Leyen welcomed progress towards a US-Iran deal.
  • The planned deal is supposed to end the war in the Middle East soon.
  • Von der Leyen calls for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and freedom of navigation.
  • European leaders unequivocally reject the possibility of Iran developing a nuclear weapon.
  • Marco Rubio has announced that the official introduction of the Iran deal is imminent.

“We need an agreement that actually de-escalates the conflict, reopens the Strait of Hormuz and guarantees full freedom of navigation without any obstacles. We must not allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon,” von der Leyen wrote.

Challenges in the region

In his Platform X statement, Starmer, in turn, wrote that the UK would work with its international partners to “seize this opportunity” to help achieve a long-term solution in the region. He also reiterated that it is important that Iran never have the opportunity to develop a nuclear weapon.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday that an agreement with Iran that could formally end the war in the Middle East could be announced soon.
