SP has a 29% drop in deforestation in the Atlantic Forest – 05/25/2026 – Panel

The State of recorded a 29% drop in deforestation, according to data released by the SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation and the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe).

The deforested area fell from 49 hectares in the period 2023-24 to 35. It is the smallest period ever analyzed – the lowest rate was in the 2018-2019 biennium, which had 43 hectares of vegetation suppression.

The survey also shows that the state has 2.34 million hectares of preserved Atlantic Forest, equivalent to 13.7% of the native vegetation within the law enforcement area that protects the biome.

In the Southeast region, São Paulo had the lowest volume of deforestation. Minas Gerais had 3,092 hectares deforested, while Rio de Janeiro recorded 82 and Espírito Santo, 56.

“The Atlantic Forest plays a fundamental role in the State’s water security, biodiversity and climate resilience. The reduction in deforestation in São Paulo demonstrates that integrated public policies, combined with monitoring and environmental restoration, produce concrete results”, says the Secretary of Infrastructure and Logistics of the State of São Paulo,

Management Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) says that the result is the result of a series of actions, such as recovery of native vegetation, formation of ecological corridors and initiatives aimed at water security and adaptation to climate change.
