If the federal government’s rumored plans come true, Austria’s university budgets are threatened with a de facto cut of around 14 percent in the coming performance agreement period 2028-2030. The savings of one billion euros planned by Science Minister Eva-Maria Holzleitner (SPÖ) compared to the previous three-year performance agreement period correspond to around half of the current total budget of the University of Vienna, where, with more than 80,000 students, around a third of all students at public universities in Austria are enrolled.
