Despite not having defined the details of the reaction to the United States’ decision to classify the PCC and CV factions as terrorist organizations, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will highlight the defense of national sovereignty when dealing with the issue.
The path is seen as a way of opposing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), pre-candidate for president, who celebrated the decision, taken two days after his visit to American President Donald Trump.
Just as was done when the tariff was enacted in July last year, Lula and his allies must emphasize that the Bolsonaro family works against the country’s interests, as the classification of the factions as terrorist groups could harm Brazilian companies.
The scope of the measure could have impacts on the financial market, due to the possibility of sanctions in the face of the infiltration of organized crime in formal sectors of the economy, and on the diplomatic relations between the two countries, since the USA has already used the fight against “narco-terrorism” as a justification for military actions outside its territory.
After Lula’s meeting with Trump on the 8th, the Brazilian government considered that the possibility of classifying the PCC and the CV was not in the immediate perspective of the Americans.
Due to the friendly atmosphere between the two presidents, the expectation was that an announcement of this type would not occur. Thus, Planalto was taken by surprise with Thursday’s decision by the US State Department.

Last week, in an interview with GLOBO, Minister Wellington Lima e Silva had said that he did not see the possibility of the measure being adopted in the “near horizon”.
The government still calibrates the tone of the official reaction to the United States’ decision with the fear that a very emphatic demonstration could be read by the population as “defense of bandits”.
