João Fonseca competes for a place in the semi-final with Jakub Mensik – 06/01/2026 – Sport

João Fonseca will play in prime time this Tuesday (2) against Czech Jakub Mensik, in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros. The confrontation was scheduled for 8:15 pm in Paris (3:15 pm Brasília time).

The winner of this duel will face in the semi-final the winner of the clash between German Alexander Zverev (3rd in the world) and Spaniard Rafael Jodar (29th), who also play the previous game on Tuesday, on the Philippe-Chatrier court (the main court in the Paris complex).

The tennis player from Rio, 19 years old and 30th. of the world, managed on Sunday (31) to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time by defeating Norwegian Casper Ruud by 3 sets to 1. In the previous round, the Brazilian had already achieved another feat: beating Novak Djokovic and being the first Brazilian to defeat the Serb in the main draw of a tournament.

Mensik, 20 years old and 27th. in the world rankings, he only played against Fonseca once in the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals, a tournament that brings together the eight best under-20 tennis players and has different scoring rules (sets only go up to four games and, in case of a 3-3 tie, it goes to a tie-break). On that occasion, the Brazilian came out on top.

The Czech’s main strike is his serve. At 1.96m, he used his serve to win his main title against Djokovic in 2025: the Masters 1000 in Miami (played on a hard court). Like the Brazilian, Mensik is already in his best position in a Grand Slam.

Each of the young tennis players has already secured a prize of 470 thousand euros (more than R$2.77 million) for reaching the quarterfinals.

Whoever wins will take another 280 thousand euros (R$ 1.65 million).

To date, Fonseca has already accumulated, in prize money on the court alone, more than US$3.33 million (equivalent today to more than R$16.7 million).

What is already certain this year is that Roland Garros will have an unprecedented champion.
