Pancreatic cancer has been considered one of the most feared cancer diagnoses for decades. In Austria, 1,600 to 2,000 people are affected by the diagnosis every year. Also in fiction – in Robert Menasse’s novella The life decision – the dreaded illness recently made a dramatic appearance. Because early symptoms are usually absent or nonspecific, the diagnosis is often only made when the cancer has already spread or can no longer be operated on.
