Slovak car racer Matej Homola (31) unexpectedly ended up in hospital. He announced to his fans on social networks that he is in the intensive care unit. The young competitor was troubled by chest pains. After visiting the emergency department on Friday, May 22, he was diagnosed with myocarditis, i.e. inflammation of the heart muscle.
The athlete had to undergo several examinations. “So far, all examinations do not show signs of a worsening condition, or greater paralysis of the heart, on the contrary, the heart appears strong. So now it’s important to catch it and then things will gradually return to normal with the peace regime,” he wrote on May 25 on the social network.
After spending almost a week in the ICU, he revealed what caused the myocarditis. “The confirmed myocarditis was caused by an untreated intestinal infection, which, when the body was fighting it, “chose” as an immune response to attack the heart (supposedly quite common in young people). It is that infection that is still holding me back a bit, because only these days the antibiotics have started to take effect and the temperature is finally going down. As for the heart, according to the examinations, it is healthy, almost 100% functional, just with the inflammation,” revealed what was hidden behind the terrifying diagnosis.
Homola was released from the Ružinovo hospital after 7 days. “There is now a longer rest period at home to allow the heart to heal 100%. I will be under the supervision of doctors and a cardiologist, who will then set a plan for gradual body loading,” he revealed that it will still be a long run.
The racer is grateful for the people around him. “Thank you for all your messages and comments, I really appreciate it. I also thank my family and girlfriend for their support during hospitalization and for their great attitude and professionalism. I thank the doctors and nurses at the Ružinov hospital. PS: value your health, don’t take it for granted and listen to your body. After all, life is beautiful,” he told the public. You can find a PHOTO of the post in the gallery.
