Historic restaurant in Lisbon is raising funds to avoid closing for good

For decades, it was one of the restaurants that marked the lives of many Lisbon residents. Now, a restaurant with more than half a century of activity is facing financial difficulties and is seeking support from the community to continue with its doors open.

According to , the Faz Figura restaurant, founded in 1974 and located in the Santa Apolônia region, launched a crowdfunding campaign with the aim of raising 60 thousand euros. The initiative comes after several years marked by financial restrictions, market changes and operational difficulties that put business continuity at risk.

Request for help to avoid foreclosure

The campaign takes place via the PPL platform and, at the time of publication of the news, it had only raised a small part of the intended amount. The deadline ends on June 30th, and this is the bet found by the management to try to guarantee the survival of the space.

Pedro Dias, owner of the restaurant, explains that the problems began to worsen during the pandemic period. The significant drop in revenue between 2020 and 2022 forced the use of credit, increasing the company’s financial burden at a particularly demanding stage for the sector.

Difficulties that have been accumulating

In addition to the consequences of the pandemic, other factors have emerged that have contributed to the current situation. According to Expresso, changes in consumption habits and the increase in raw material costs added pressure to an already fragile structure.

These challenges were also compounded by the works carried out in the vicinity of the restaurant. According to the same source, the existence of construction sites and restrictions on access to the area ended up keeping customers away for several years, directly affecting the operation of the establishment.

More than just a business

Despite the difficulties, the owner states that the intention continues to be to keep Faz Figura in operation. On the campaign page, Pedro Dias argues that the restaurant represents more than a commercial activity, highlighting the connection created over decades with several generations of customers.

The person responsible also leaves an appeal to the community, remembering that many people keep memories associated with the space. The publication adds that the campaign aims to mobilize former customers, friends and lovers of Portuguese cuisine to help preserve a place that is part of the city’s history.

Over more than 50 years of activity, Faz Figura has established itself as a reference in Lisbon’s restaurants. Its gastronomic proposal is based on Portuguese cuisine with a contemporary approach, valuing national products and ingredients from various regions of the country.

Among the dishes most associated with the house’s identity are Bacalhau Faz Figura, sea bass in orange sauce and braised veal cheek. The Expresso newspaper writes that the traditional Portuguese stew also continues to be part of the restaurant’s seasonal offering.

Future will be decided in the coming weeks

The result of the campaign could be decisive for the future of the space. With the deadline approaching the end, management is seeking to raise the necessary amount to stabilize the activity and overcome a particularly difficult period.

For now, Faz Figura maintains its usual operations, serving meals for dinner during the week and also for lunch on weekends. The objective is to ensure that a restaurant that has spanned more than five decades of history can continue to be part of Lisbon’s gastronomic landscape.
