Explosion in apartment leads police to discover homemade drug laboratory in Rio

Drug-making materials seized from a burned-out apartment in Copacabana

A fire allowed the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro (PMERJ) to locate, this Wednesday (3) a homemade drug refining laboratory in an apartment in Copacabana, in the South Zone of the city. Police officers seized a large quantity of drugs and equipment used to manipulate narcotics. The discovery was made after a complaint from residents.

According to PMERJ, Residents of the building reported that the fire was caused by the handling of chemical substances used to produce drugs. Intelligence service agents from the Copacabana Battalion (19th BPM) were responsible for the incident.

The seized material was sent to the 13th DP (Copacabana), which will continue with the investigation of the case.

The fire caused an explosion in the propertywhich is on Rua Barata Ribeiro. A man was injured and taken to Miguel Couto Hospital, in Gávea, in a very serious condition. Estadão tried to contact the hospital and the Fire Department, but received no response.

In security camera videos circulating on social media, it is possible to see that the explosion throws part of the window. In another footage, a mattress and what appears to be an air conditioning structure are on the street, set on fire.
