The Battle of the Lechfeld south of Augsburg was formative for Otto I, known as the Great, in two ways. On the one hand, in the course of this military conflict that took place in 955, he was able to push back the Hungarians who were invading his territory and secure his position of power in the East Frankish Empire. From then on he was referred to as pater patriae, father of the fatherland, and he gave his name to the Ottonians, who were to shape the history of Central Europe for several generations. On the other hand, the battle was formative from a personal perspective, as Otto lost several teeth and suffered a crooked nose and fractures on his face.
