The Danish midfielder, who collapsed on the field during Euro 2020 and had to be revived, collapsed on the pitch again this Sunday. He is conscious and is fine: his pacemaker “did what it was programmed to do: bring him back.”
Danish football international Christian Eriksen Today he fell lifeless on the pitch during the friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine, a match that ended up being cancelled.
In Odense, Denmark, the 34-year-old midfielder grabbed his chest and collapsed in the 66th minute, at a time when the Danish team was winning 2-1, leading teammates and opponents to call the medical team immediately.
Players from both teams fformed a circle to protect the athlete from the cameras, while the footballer, who in 2025/26 represented Wolfsburg, received assistance.
The Danish left the pitch about 10 minutes later and referee Sigurd Kringstad decided to end the match, after meeting with the teams.
On social media, the Danish Football Association confirmed that Eriksen “is conscious and, given the circumstances, is well”.
The Danish national team doctor, Morten Boesentold TV 2 Sport that the first signs are very positive. “Christian is doing well at the moment. He he is fine and, by his own desire, he left on his own foot. And that’s an excellent sign.”
Boesen says that the pacemaker the player uses triggered a shock while playing. “It seems to me that I saw him putting his hand to his chest and maybe even shouting ‘ouch’. And then it fell. That’s when I approached him.”
“I think that the device did what it was programmed to do: bring him back“, added the doctor.
According to reports from Danish TV2, cited by , the offensive midfielder’s wife jumped onto the pitch shortly after Eriksen collapsed. Already aware, the player got up and hugged herin a moment that was greeted by the entire stadium.
Today’s episode refers to the collapse suffered by the midfielder on June 12, 2021, at Euro2020, against Finland, when it was due to a cardiorespiratory arrest.
The then Inter Milan player was receiving medical attention on the pitch, and regained consciousness. He was taken from the lawn on a stretcherventilated, and with several teammates around him, while applause was heard throughout the Parken Stadium, in the city of Copenhagen.
It was also Morten Boesen who at the time resuscitated Eriksen. the doctor said at the time: “cardiac medicines only last two months. Luckily, what was in my suitcase was new, I had bought it for the Euro Cup and I was very happy about it.” Boesen admitted that the cardiac massage and resuscitation, still on the pitch, prevented his death.
Eriksen five months later, with a pacemaker implanted that allowed him to return to competition. Despite still having a contract with Inter Milan, was forced to leave Italian footballwhose rules do not allow a player to enter the field.
Elected Danish player of the year four times, he returned to football in 2022, after eight months off the pitch, with a transfer to Brentford FCfrom the Premier League, before moving to the Manchester Unitedwhere he played three seasons, until 2025. He currently plays for Wolfsburg, in the Bundesliga.
